Engagement – Secret to Fulfilled Career & Life

“Engagement” It is a state when an individual expresses their entire self physically, cognitively and emotionally in whatever they do in their life. Though it applies to all areas of life, it is easy to understand from the career point of view as many of us spend significant portion of our time on it.

Engagement is a state of flow where you are lost in what is happening around you and you are immersed completely in whatever you are doing. Example includes most of the top sports players who though play really well in league matches confirms to be more engaged in finals and major championships. It happens when you are faced with a High challenging task and you have High skill to handle the challenge. This is great state to be in and you need to be in that situation to experience the real feeling. It is just simply awesome.

  • When you have High challenge with Low skill, the result could be frustration, anger, desperation, stress and the end result might be disappointing (though you might have completed the task)
  • When you have High skill with Low challenge, the same results in boredom over a period of time
  • When you have High challenge with High skill, it is a state of flow where you are completely engaged in whatever you do

Only few of us experience this level of flow in organisations and corporate due to the multiple constraints that corporates bring in. If you have and experiencing flow in your corporate job and organisation, you are BLESSED and don’t look for a change

When we are in this topic, it is pertinent to discuss another important area that we all should know and remember on a daily basis for the rest of our life

We all have what are innate talents, natural strengths and personality that is part of core as an individual. These are given to us by god as gifts and we did not spent any time to acquire them.
As we get into school, we all learn lot of skills some of which we call as “OUR CORE” (our innate talents, natural strengths and personality) and other skills that we call as “OUR NON CORE”.
Our educational system is highly focused towards organisations and corporates which means we get evaluated and labeled on what others want and not what we truly are. This is one of the main reason some of us lack confidence and start doubting ourselves when we come out of school, college or when we are working in organisations
As we get into college, start working or starting our own families…we learn lot of skills that are part of “OUR CORE” and some which are “OUR NON CORE”

If the life or your profession gives a challenge that is part of your core – you seem to like the challenge, look forward to challenge, consider challenges as opportunities and feel completely engaged
If the life or your profession gives a challenge that is not part of your core – you will get frustrated, stressed, exhibit loads of negative emotions on self and others, hate the journey, look forward to external pleasures (even bad habits)

Easier way to understand this is through an example – For a person who is right handed, right hand is the core and left hand is the non core. He adds skill called “Handwriting” into his life. If he is asked to write 10 pages, he will find it easy, natural, engaged and end result will be good (example that is given is intentional simplicity purpose and don’t confuse it if he is interested or not). On the other hand, if he is asked to write 10 pages in left hand, he might have the skill but because it is not his core, he will experience frustration, sadness, stress and end result might never give him satisfaction.

Just imagine how will be his life over a period of time. This is what we experience in many of our career and look forward to Saturday / Sunday for relaxation (How many Whatsapp jokes around this – SO SAD TO SEE) whereas your career where we spend 40 to 50% of the time should be fun, excitement, one that gives you more energy and not drain, look forward to more of it). I wish all of you experience the state of “Engagement” that arises from the frequent use of innate abilities, strengths and exhibiting your personality

Exercise

Go back into your life and find out instances when you seem to be in flow or engaged (Clue: You look forward to more of it and time runs like anything)
Try to list 3 instances from the past where you seem to be working from YOUR CORE + skills that are part of the core
Try to list 3 instances from the past where you seem to be working only with skills (without core)
